Demonstrators oppose the easing of sanctions on Russia's energy sector
Activists held a demonstration in New York's Times Square under the slogan 'Deals cost lives.' Protesters voiced their opposition to the U.S.-approved import of Russian diesel fuel. This was reported by Ukrinform citing Yaroslav Yarysh, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The event was organised by the non-governmental organisation Rebirth.Ukraine. According to journalist and activist Yaroslav Yarysh, the protest’s primary goal was to draw international attention to the consequences of easing sanctions against the Russian Federation and to highlight war crimes committed by the Kremlin.
Details of the energy deal
Tensions rose after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on October 9 that Russia, with U.S. consent, would immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the global market. The plan stipulates that another 500,000 tons are to be delivered in November, followed by an additional 1 million tons. Furthermore, Russia has pledged to release another 3 million tons of diesel to the market.
Reaction to Washington’s decision
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that such gifts to Putin would not lead to peace. This stance was echoed by bipartisan U.S. senators, who sharply criticised the agreement on importing Russian energy resources, calling the move a betrayal of allies and a gift to an adversary.
