Petr Pavel called the Trump administration's decision a mistake that weakens Ukraine's position
Czech President Petr Pavel stated that the agreement between the U.S. and Russia on diesel supplies significantly stalled the peace process in Ukraine. According to the Czech leader, this move enabled Moscow to ease the sanctions pressure. This was reported by Politico citing Petr Pavel, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
During an interview, Petr Pavel noted that ceasefire agreements had seemed quite close until recently. The situation shifted following Donald Trump’s decision to lift restrictions on Russian oil product imports.
Economic incentive for Moscow
Joint measures by European and American partners against Russia’s energy sector and oligarchs had been putting serious pressure on the Russian economy for a long time. The contract, signed earlier in October, involves supplying hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to the United States, providing an unexpected financial and morale boost to the Russian side.
Commenting on the deal, the White House called it a successful move to supply the global market with fuel and reduce energy prices. Despite official explanations, the decision drew criticism even among American lawmakers, some of whom called for the cancellation of these arrangements.
Ukraine’s stance
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly stated that this Washington move plays into the enemy’s hands. He believes it will allow Russia to continue its military operations and disregard international norms, while devaluing the diplomatic efforts he described as a “smokscreen.”
Petr Pavel expressed support for his Ukrainian counterpart, emphasizing that Ukraine is the victim in this conflict. He also noted that the U.S. president’s approach to dialogue with Vladimir Putin is based primarily on economic benefits for America rather than an ideological struggle between democracy and autocracy.
Risks for European security
Although the Czech president refrained from directly accusing the U.S. of betrayal, he characterized the decision as a serious mistake. He warned that such a policy gives Russia hope that it can disregard the interests of Europe and Ukraine by making direct deals with major powers.
Answering a question about the possibility of resuming energy trade with Russia in the future, Pavel noted that this would only be possible once Moscow starts respecting the sovereignty and borders of other nations. In his view, such conditions are not currently met.
