Magyar voiced his position on Ukraine and the Russian Federation after winning the elections in Hungary: key points

The newly elected leader of Hungary, Peter Magyar, whose Tisza party won the April 12 parliamentary elections, outlined the country’s future foreign policy. He opposed Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU and declared its readiness for pragmatic cooperation with Russia, referring to geographical factors.

During a press conference in Budapest, Peter Magyar thanked the world leaders for their congratulations and commented on the reaction of Moscow and Beijing to the results of the will of the Hungarians, informs the portal  PromPolitInform with reference to the “European truth.”

According to him, Budapest is ready for constructive cooperation with its eastern partners.

Position on Ukraine’s membership in the EU and financial assistance

Peter Magyar stressed that he does not support the mechanism of accelerated membership of Ukraine in the European Union. In his opinion, the country should go through the full process of preparing for admission on a general basis. In addition, the future Prime Minister announced a referendum in Hungary on Ukraine’s membership in the EU after the completion of the preparatory stage.

As for granting Ukraine a loan of 90 billion euros from the EU, Magyar expressed solidarity with the position of the previous government regarding the refusal of direct participation in financing.

“The Orban government agreed this loan in December on the condition that Hungary does not make its contribution together with the Czech Republic and Slovakia; the decision has already been made, so I don’t know why it should be reviewed again, “the Tisa party leader emphasized.

Relations with Russia, energy and sanctions

Peter Magyar announced his intention to build “pragmatic cooperation” with the Kremlin, noting that “geography is geography.” He expressed the hope that relations between Hungary and Russia will change in the right direction in the near future, and after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, sanctions will be lifted from the Russian Federation.

The politician paid special attention to the issue of energy security:

Hungary will not stop buying Russian oil.
Stopping supplies through the Druzhba pipeline is regarded as a threat to the country’s energy supply.

Work in the EU and questions of sovereignty

Despite the fact that Hungarians are satisfied with the country’s membership in the EU and NATO, Magyar pointed out that there are “big mistakes” in the work of the European Union. He also emphasized the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.

“I ask all foreign states to treat Hungary with the same respect with which it treats them. We must respect other sovereign states. And unlike previous times, I will not interfere in the internal affairs of any other country, even the Balkan countries,” concluded Peter Magyar.
