The US State Department has increased funding for the United Nations humanitarian initiative by another $1.8 billion. The total amount of the program has increased to $3.8 billion, and part of the additional funds will be directed to the implementation of humanitarian projects in Ukraine. As reported by the PromPolitInform portal, Delo.ua reports with reference to the message of the Ambassador of Ukraine to the US, Olga Stefanishyna.
According to her, specific programs and amounts of funding will be determined by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs after agreement with the US Department of State.
The State Department noted that the additional funding should confirm long-term support for humanitarian programs, while at the same time strengthening the requirements for effectiveness and implementation of reforms in the UN system.
In addition to Ukraine, humanitarian funds in Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and a number of other countries will receive support.
The State Department also emphasized that the United States remains the largest humanitarian donor in the world and called on other countries and the private sector to increase financial participation in humanitarian programs.
At the end of 2025, the United States and the UN humanitarian agency signed the first agreement on the “humanitarian restart”. According to the American side, the initial contribution of $ 2 billion has already helped more than 21 million people receive the necessary support.
We add that the European Commission approved the initial humanitarian budget for 2026 in the amount of 1.9 billion euros. Of this amount, 145 million euros will be directed to support Ukraine.
