The company Metinvest has won the international UN Global Compact Ukraine Partnership for Sustainability Award 2025 in the “Recovery of Ukraine” category. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Metinvest, according to the PromPolitInform portal.
The company received the award for creating the first steel underground frontline hospital.
The Partnership for Sustainability Award is the most prestigious recognition in the fields of corporate sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). Each year, the award honors the best partnership projects implemented by businesses, government institutions, and civil society aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, protecting the environment, overcoming social and economic challenges, and promoting peace.
This year, 150 applications from 22 countries were submitted. Of these, 93 projects were selected as finalists. The projects were evaluated by an independent international jury that included experts from Harvard University, the London School of Economics, the World Economic Forum, the Basel Institute on Governance, and other influential international institutions.
Metinvest created Ukraine’s first underground frontline medical hospital in coordination with the “East” Medical Forces. The facility is located six meters underground and equipped with communications systems, electronic warfare protection, alternative power sources, and security systems. Inside, it includes a laboratory, surgical equipment, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, defibrillators, and more. In terms of equipment and capacity, it meets NATO Role/Echelon 2 field hospital standards.
“This hospital has already saved approximately four thousand lives of servicemen carrying out combat missions 8–10 kilometers from the contact line. Recently, one such unit was directly hit by three aerial bombs. Thanks to the hospital, lives were saved. Thank God, the entire unit survived,” said Roman Kuziv, commander of the “East” Medical Forces grouping.
The stabilization point provides resuscitation, treatment, and patient care until discharge or evacuation to another stationary medical facility. It has two operating rooms, where doctors can simultaneously perform a wide range of urgent surgical procedures without transporting the wounded to distant hospitals. The hospital can receive up to 100 wounded personnel per day.
“Underground hospitals are our know-how, created on the basis of steel bunkers. When it comes to saving the lives of defenders, every minute matters. That is why placing stabilization points near the frontline and keeping them concealed from the enemy allows medics to work safely and provide timely assistance. This Ukrainian engineering innovation has already proven its effectiveness and has attracted interest from one of the world’s leading armies,” said Metinvest’s Chief Operating Officer Oleksandr Myronenko.

Metinvest’s Underground Hospitals
It is worth noting that this year Akhmetov’s Metinvest has already built a second NATO Role 2-level hospital medical point, allocating more than UAH 21 million for the project.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Metinvest’s total assistance to Ukraine has amounted to UAH 9.3 billion, of which UAH 4.9 billion has been allocated to support the army within Rinat Akhmetov’s Steel Front initiative.
As previously reported, the first underground hospital became operational in September 2024. It was also built by Rinat Akhmetov’s Metinvest in coordination with the Medical Forces.
