The Ukrainian film “Traces” by Alisa Kovalenko and Marysia Nikityuk won the best documentary award in the Panorama program at the 76th Berlin Film Festival. This was reported by Suspilne Kultura and PromPolitInform.

The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 22. This is the first time a Ukrainian film has won the main award in this section.

The Panorama winner is always determined by audience voting in two categories: feature and documentary. This year, 12 films were included in the Panorama documentary section. 26,500 viewers voted. What is known about “Traces”?

The film tells the stories of six Ukrainian women who have experienced sexual violence in the Donbas, Kherson, and Kyiv regions since 2014 as a result of the Russian invasion.

The film’s co-directors are Alisa Kovalenko, known for “We Will Not Fading Away” and “With Love from the Front,” and Marysia Nikityuk, who has worked on films such as “When Trees Fall” and “I Am Nina.”

“Traces” was produced by Olga Bregman and Natalia Libet through their independent production company, 2Brave Productions.

The film was a co-production between Ukraine and Poland, and was acquired by the French broadcaster ARTE France while still in production.

As a reminder, “20 Days in Mariupol” was recognized as the best film of the year and received the Golden Dzyga award.
