President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is ready to work on the issue of allowing weapons to civilians for self-defense. According to RBC-Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky told reporters about this, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
Appropriate changes should be made exclusively at the legislative level, so I expect from government officials, especially from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to work together with parliamentarians, with their colleagues on the relevant committee, and show this concept. I am ready to work together on this issue, “Zelensky said.
The president called the issue “very sensitive.” He noted that there were a lot of approaches to him. I agree with the experts that, in principle, it is necessary to put an end to this issue, although it is not easy, because it is a big responsibility, “he concluded.
- President Zelensky’s statement came shortly after the head of his office, Kirill Budanov, opposed the legalization of short-barreled weapons for the civilian population.
- On April 19, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klymenko called for granting the civilian population the right to possess short-barreled weapons for self-defense. This happened the day after the fatal shooting in Kyiv, which was arranged by a resident of the capital Dmitry Vasilchenkov. As a result of his actions, seven people died.
- The head of the National police said that Ukrainians have more than 1.16 million weapons. According to him, crimes with the use of weapons, which were distributed to citizens at the beginning of a full-scale war, are not currently recorded.
