Units of the Defence Forces of Ukraine have deployed more than 70 types of systems based on artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to strike enemy targets. Over 200 companies in the country are currently involved in the production of AI drones. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
On the Brave1 Market defence technology marketplace, 46 AI-related solutions are currently available to defenders. These include target recognition modules, optical stabilisation, and automatic terminal guidance. The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine aims to equip 100% of frontline drones with computer vision and AI algorithms.
Key tasks such as navigation, object identification, and autonomous strikes are being delegated to algorithms, though the final decision to engage remains with a human operator. Computer vision compares terrain features against onboard maps to navigate without GPS signals. By locking onto an object, a drone can continue toward its target autonomously even if communication is lost due to enemy electronic warfare.
Model training on real combat data
To optimise algorithms, more than 100 companies have gained access to the Brave1 Dataroom, which provides structured datasets of aerial and ground targets captured by optical and thermal sensors in various conditions. The platform primarily focuses on intercepting aerial threats.
Additionally, access to Avengers Labs has been opened to Ukrainian defence developers. The platform contains an annotated dataset of 5 million battlefield frames sourced largely from the DELTA combat system. The system’s algorithms detect 70% of enemy equipment in Vezha video streams within 2.2 seconds per unit.
Systemic scale-up of military technologies
In March, the Ministry of Defence also launched the “A1” Artificial Intelligence Centre. The specialised unit is tasked with analysing combat data, speeding up the kill chain, and developing an AI-driven infrastructure across the armed forces.
