On the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, a mandatory history textbook is being introduced for grades 5–7, aimed at distorting historical facts. The new program will take effect on September 1, 2026. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing the Telegram channel of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, based on data from Dmytro Lubinets.
Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets noted that educational institutions in the occupation zone are being used to forcibly alter the worldview of students. The Russian administration is imposing its own language and myths regarding Russia’s alleged “historical right” to Ukrainian lands.
Use of propaganda materials
For middle school students in the occupied parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, a textbook titled “History of our region. Donbas and Novorossiya” has been printed. Its goal is to transmit Russian imperial narratives through the education system.
Consequences of the occupiers’ education policy
The implementation of such programs is based on a multi-level system that includes erasing historical memory, militarizing the youth, and attempts to involve children in the conflict against their own state. The Ukrainian side is documenting these facts for subsequent response at the international level.
