The cost of developing an interceptor for jet targets should not exceed $50,000
Ukraine needs to develop a specialized cruise missile to intercept enemy aerial targets, with a cost cap of $50,000. This was stated by aviation expert Anatolii Khrapchynskyi. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Лев Шевченко), according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The current strategy for countering aerial threats must rely on two layers of defense. The first tier, consisting of FPV drones, is already operating as an immediate solution. However, protecting against upgraded attack assets, such as jet-powered drones, requires the construction of a second, strategic air defense layer.
Modern Russian drones are increasing their speed, reaching 800 km/h. Existing countermeasures, designed for speeds up to 500 km/h, are insufficient for effective interception. Solving this problem demands new approaches to aerodynamics, airframe design, and the integration of automated control systems.
Technological production challenges
The core element of the new missile must be a high-tech homing head, such as a thermal or radar seeker. The expert highlights that using inexpensive components, such as Chinese optics, is not viable. Instead, it is advisable to establish cooperation with European manufacturers to gain access to high-quality technologies.
Ukraine’s defense industry has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of European technologies. In this context, it is important to note the existence of facilities such as Motor Sich and Ivchenko-Progress, whose engines were historically used in Kh-55 cruise missiles. The experience of these enterprises could be pivotal in developing a domestic propulsion system.
Scaling and state-funded projects
The state already has developments in this area, including the upgraded Coral missile from Ukroboronprom, which is equipped with two types of guidance heads. However, the main challenge for the domestic defense industry remains transitioning from prototypes to mass production, which requires significant financial investment.
Previously, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine announced the acquisition of the first domestic jet interceptor, Alexa Spatium. Concurrently, Ukrainian arms manufacturers suggest that the technical barrier to countering jet-powered enemy targets has been overcome, although large-scale deployment of new air defense systems will require additional time in the near term.
