Old 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 hryvnia bills remain valid legal tender
The National Bank of Ukraine is continuing the gradual withdrawal of older banknote series from circulation. Modern banknotes featuring updated designs and enhanced security elements are being introduced for cash transactions instead. This was reported by Minfin, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The process affects 20 hryvnia notes from the 2003 series, 50 hryvnia notes from 2004, 100 hryvnia notes from 2005, 200 hryvnia notes from 2007, and 500 hryvnia notes from 2006. The regulator is replacing these bills with modern specimens that offer a higher level of protection against counterfeiting.
Status of outdated banknotes
Holding older series bills in your wallet does not require an immediate exchange. These notes remain valid legal tender within Ukraine, allowing citizens to use them freely for payments in stores, at markets, and at institutions without any restrictions.
Mechanism of cash withdrawal
The replacement process occurs naturally through the banking system and retail networks. As financial institutions receive old banknotes from clients, they gradually remove them from circulation and do not return them to cash registers or ATMs. As a result, the share of outdated banknotes in the total money supply is steadily declining, giving way to the new generation of currency.
