Andriy Melnyk Explains in UN Why Russia Cannot Win the War

Russian military spending has reached 12 percent of GDP and consumes half the budget

Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Andriy Melnyk stated that Russia cannot win the war due to its failures on the battlefield and the collapse of its own economy. The diplomat noted that the aggressor state is suffering under the burden of senseless military spending. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

During his address to the UN Security Council, Andriy Melnyk emphasized that the Kremlin lacks the capability to achieve successes on the battlefield. According to the diplomat, the stagnation of Russian troops along the frontline is the first fundamental reason that makes it impossible for the invaders to achieve their objectives in this war.

State of the Russian Economy

The second factor of Russia’s inevitable defeat, according to the Ukrainian representative, is the systemic collapse of the country’s economic model. The aggressor state’s public finances are critically depleted due to excessive funding of military needs, leading to a deepening of structural economic weaknesses.

Melnyk informed those present that expenditures on financing combat operations have reached 12 percent of the country’s total economic output. Simultaneously, nearly 50 percent of the entire federal budget of Russia is being directed toward war efforts.

Call to the International Community

The Ukrainian diplomat called on Security Council members to support a resolution aimed at halting Russia’s war crimes. Melnyk stressed the need to force the aggressor to withdraw troops from Ukrainian territories and stop the systematic killings of civilians.

The Ukrainian UN envoy invited Security Council delegates to visit Kyiv in person to see the consequences of Russian aggression. In his view, this would help members of the Security Council realize the level of their own responsibility for inaction in the context of the genocidal war unleashed by Russia.
