The Chinese President stated that the conflict resolution requires European participation
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has not supported the idea of holding a three-way summit with the US and Russia to discuss the war in Ukraine. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reported Beijing's lack of interest in such a format. This was reported by Yahoo News citing DPA, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier discussed the possibility of a summit with the Chinese leader during his visit to Beijing on Friday. According to the German President, upon hearing the suggestion, Xi Jinping reacted with a look of surprise.
No preparations for negotiations
The German President noted that Beijing is not currently conducting any preparations to organize a meeting in a China-US-Russia format regarding the Ukrainian issue. Xi Jinping emphasized that he views the war in Ukraine as a European conflict, therefore resolving the situation requires the direct presence of European representatives at the negotiating table.
APEC agenda
It is expected that the leaders of the three nations may meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled for mid-November in Shenzhen. However, according to the Chinese position, the issue of Ukraine is not included in the forum’s agenda.
Previously, the initiative for a three-way meeting was voiced by Vladimir Putin, who proposed discussing nuclear disarmament issues. In turn, US President Donald Trump expressed openness to such a dialogue, allowing for the inclusion of the Ukraine topic on the agenda as well.
