Shmyhal announced when CHPP-5 and CHPP-6 will be restored after the attack on Kyiv

CHPP-5 and CHPP-6 in Kyiv were damaged as a result of the Russian attack overnight. According to preliminary estimates by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, restoring heat to CHPP-5 could take about a day, and to CHPP-6, approximately two days. He announced this on Thursday during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Energy Committee, according to Vgorode.ua. PromPolitInform reports.

According to him, the ballistic missile strike caused debris to strike two of the capital’s combined heat and power plants, causing significant damage to the equipment.

WHAT EXACTLY WAS DAMAGED AT THE CHPP

At one of the combined heat and power plants, the gas distribution and compressor units were damaged. At the other, the circulation pumps and water treatment system were damaged.

Editor’s note: A combined heat and power plant (CHP) is a facility that simultaneously produces electricity and heat for district heating and hot water supply. Circulation pumps keep the coolant moving within the system, while the water treatment system purifies and brings the water to the required technical parameters. According to Denys Shmyhal, the restoration of CHP-5 is expected to be completed within 24 hours. As for CHP-6, work could take about two days. The exact timeframe depends on the extent of the damage and the pace of repairs.

HOW MANY HOMES ARE LEFT WITHOUT HEAT

As a result of the overnight strike, 2,600 homes in Kyiv were left without heat. In addition, another 1,100 homes are still without heat due to previous attacks. The minister noted that above-zero temperatures meant that water from the heating mains did not need to be drained. This is important for quickly restoring heat.

“This will save us two weeks of wasting time filling the system and repairing leaks. We will restore heat to people as quickly as possible,” he said.

Editor’s note: If the coolant is drained from the central heating system, the process of refilling the networks, checking for leaks, and repairing any damage may take a significant amount of time.

WHAT RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE FOR KYIV RESIDENTS?

Due to the lack of heat, energy companies and the government are trying to limit power outages in the capital. According to Shmyhal, Kyiv plans to shut off no more than three power outages. Residents of high-rise buildings are advised to follow official announcements from the city government and management companies regarding heat restoration schedules and possible changes in power supply modes.
