Ukrainian nuclear power plants restored capacity by more than 90% after the Russian attack on February 7.

This was stated by the head of the State Inspectorate of Nuclear Regulation Oleg Korikov at a briefing, reports Ukrinform,

informs the PromPolitInform. portal.

“After the last Russian strike on electrical substations, the power of nuclear power plants is being restored. The capacity has already been restored by more than 90%,” said Korikov.

According to him, now Ukrainian nuclear power plants are operating stably, the radiation situation at the station sites is within the normal range.

Also, IAEA monitoring missions remain at all NPP sites, including Chernobyl.

Attack on energy

As reported, as a result of a massive Russian strike on the night of February 7, key electrical substations and thermal power plants in western Ukraine were damaged.

These were unloaded NPP units, 4.5-5 queues of emergency shutdown schedules were applied throughout Ukraine, and special emergency shutdown schedules were introduced in the eastern and northern regions.

Damage to the power system

Recall that Russian shelling since October 2025 has damaged 8.5 GW of generating capacity in Ukraine, in particular heat and hydro power stations, for urgent work on restoring generation, about $1 billion is required.

For his part, the Chairman of the Board of NPC Ukrenergo Vitaly Zaichenko said that as a result of massive Russian attacks in the energy system of Ukraine, there was a deficit, it is currently impossible to cover it through internal generation and import of electricity.
