The poverty level in Ukraine has actually doubled over the past four years, and more and more households have found themselves in the zone of financial vulnerability. Economists attribute this increase to the long-term consequences of the war, a fall in real incomes, a reduction in employment and a constant increase in prices for basic goods and services. Families with children, internally displaced persons and households where only one family member works have suffered the most from the worsening economic situation. The rise in the cost of food, utilities, and transportation has become a key factor forcing Ukrainians to adopt austerity measures.
Consumer behavior has changed dramatically. Ukrainians are increasingly abandoning non-priority purchases, reducing spending on clothing, appliances, cosmetics, and leisure. The share of cheaper brands in the grocery basket is growing, and consumers are actively looking for promotions, discounts, and alternatives to imported goods. More and more people are returning to home cooking and buying food at discount stores.
Utility bills have become one of the biggest financial burdens. Despite government support programs, some households are accumulating debt, and energy costs often exceed the capabilities of the family budget. Experts warn that the situation may worsen in the fall, when gas and electricity consumption will increase.
At the same time, Ukrainians are trying to adapt to new conditions: they are optimizing transportation costs, refusing large purchases, switching to cheaper services and reviewing the structure of daily expenses. According to analysts, such a transformation of the consumer market may persist even after the economy stabilizes.
