The termination of the contract was initiated by Prime Minister Robert Fico, despite criticism of the opposition. The decision has already been made by the Slovak government.
The Slovak state-owned company SEPS terminates the contract with the Ukrainian company Ukrenergo for emergency electricity supply, Denník N reports with reference to SEPS Director Martin Magat, informs the PromPolitInform portal.
According to Magath, the corresponding decision has already been made by the Slovak government. The initiator of the termination of the agreement was Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The SEPS director noted that the last time Ukraine received an emergency supply of electricity from Slovakia in January. After the introduction of restrictions, Kyiv allegedly made new requests for emergency supplies, but they were not fulfilled.
Magat also said that the termination of the contract would not entail any sanctions for Slovakia. At the same time, he added that ordinary commercial operations in the energy sector between the countries continue.
The issue of stopping emergency electricity supplies has become a matter of political dispute in Slovakia. In February, Robert Fico threatened to stop assistance to Ukraine amid a difficult situation in the Ukrainian energy system due to constant Russian attacks.
On February 23, he announced that Slovakia was suspending emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.
The decision caused sharp criticism of the Slovak opposition. The parliamentary party “Freedom and Solidarity” announced its intention to file a complaint with the prosecutor’s office.
Deputy Karol Galek said that the prime minister “opens a new front against Ukraine” on the side of Russia, and warned that the cessation of emergency supplies could have critical consequences for the Ukrainian energy system.
Threats to Slovakia began to be heard after Hungary, which accused Ukraine of not allowing the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. But the argument is that the Druzhba pipeline does not work after the Russian strike on the Brody station. These damage is not visible in the pictures, assured Energy Minister Denis Shmyhal.
At the same time, the EU calls on Ukraine to allow inspection of the Druzhba pipeline. Hungary and Slovakia accuse Kyiv of exaggerating the impact of the strike, although Naftogaz speaks of large-scale destruction and provides evidence.
