Bohdana is twice cheaper than its counterparts: Poland launches production of Ukrainian self-propelled guns as a potential replacement for Dana for its own army

The Polish-Ukrainian company PK MIL SA is preparing to start production of Bogdan self-propelled howitzers in Poland.

It is reported  by Business Insider Polska with reference to Puls Biznesu, informs the portal PromPolitInform.

Bogdan is a 155 mm self-propelled artillery system, which, according to the source, “has already gained recognition on the battlefield in Ukraine.”

PK MIL SA was created in October last year by the Polish Ponar Wadowice and the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Plant. The company is currently completing the formal procedures required to start production in Poland. Ponar Wadowice owns 51% of the joint venture.

According to the newspaper, the howitzer “Bogdan” was developed in Ukraine as a response to the need to modernize artillery systems in accordance with NATO standards. After the start of a full-scale invasion of Russia in 2022, its production has increased significantly. Since then, more than 600 installations have been manufactured, which have already carried out more than 800 thousand shots.

“Production in Poland opens for Bogdana the possibility of export to other countries, which cannot be done in the case of equipment manufactured in Ukraine,” the article says.

It is reported that Ponar Wadowice, which has experience in manufacturing components for the defense industry, in particular hydraulic systems for Krab howitzers and Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles, should produce key components for this artillery system.

PK MIL SA expects to sell howitzers to both the Polish army and foreign customers.

Currently, Poland uses post-Soviet 152 mm Dana howitzers, which were planned to be replaced by a more modern system within the Kryl program. However, this project was suspended.

“Bohdana is an ideal candidate for the replacement of this equipment. It is much cheaper than competitive systems and at the same time meets the requirements of NATO,” said Jacek Zygmunt, Advisor to the Ponar Wadowice Board.

According to him, due to the optimization of production and experience of Ukrainian partners, the company plans to offer a competitive price, which can be an important factor for potential customers.

He also added that the system is already of interest in different regions of the world, in particular in Europe, especially on the eastern flank of NATO.
