These are small volumes that appear at certain hours due to a temporary generation surplus.
Ukraine has resumed electricity exports to Europe for the first time since the fall of 2025. At the same time, this does not mean large-scale export of electricity from the country – we are talking only about small volumes that arise at certain hours due to a temporary generation surplus. This was reported by the Vice President for Energy of the Ukrainian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Ukraine), Oleksandr Trokhymets, writes Sudovo-Yurydychna Gazeta. The PromPolitInform portal informs.
According to him, the first deliveries amounted to only tens of megawatts – approximately 12 MW during those hours when there is a production surplus in the energy system.
“That is, this is not “export of electricity from the country”, as is often presented. This is a system balancing tool,” Trokhymets explained.
He noted that the decision on export is made by the dispatcher of NPC Ukrenergo only if there is a reserve of capacity in the power system. If the balance deteriorates, the export is immediately stopped.
Why did the electricity surplus appear
One of the reasons is the traditional spring floods, due to which more water enters the reservoir and hydroelectric power plants increase production.
Another factor is the growth of solar generation in the spring. As a result, during the day the power system sometimes produces more electricity than it can consume.
In such a situation, a choice arises: to limit the operation of power plants or to give the surplus to the external market. Exports avoid generation losses and provide additional funds for the energy sector, which are needed for repairs, equipment restoration after attacks, and preparation for the next winter.
Ukraine works synchronously with the European power system ENTSO-E, therefore, for an integrated energy market, it is normal for both import and export of electricity to occur at different times: during the day, export is possible due to a surplus, and in the evening, import during peak consumption.
