The National Assembly of Hungary by a majority of votes adopted a resolution calling on the government to abandon support for negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and block further financing of Kyiv’s military needs by the EU.
142 deputies voted for the document, 28 voted against, 4 more abstained, the Hungarian television channel ATV reports, informs the portal PromPolitInform.
The resolution notes that due to the ongoing war and the alleged “non-compliance” of Ukraine with the EU membership criteria, Budapest should not support the start of accession negotiations.
The document also calls on the government to:
- not to provide Ukraine with financial assistance and weapons;
- to prevent the allocation of funds from European funds for the military needs of Kyiv.
The authors of the resolution argue that further financing of Ukraine by the European Union can occur by reducing agricultural subsidies, which supposedly will directly hit Hungarian farmers.
Therefore, the parliament calls on the government “to take all necessary measures to prevent Hungary and the entire European Union from being drawn into the Russian-Ukrainian war.”
This decision was another manifestation of the position of the Hungarian leadership led by Viktor Orban, who repeatedly blocked or hindered the EU’s decision on Ukraine, citing national interests, economic risks and unwillingness to escalate the conflict.
We add that the conflict relations between Hungary and Ukraine escalated when Budapest detained two collection machines of Sberbank and seven collectors in a case allegedly about “money laundering.” And although during the day Ukrainian citizens were released, the valuables that were transported from Austria to Ukraine still remain in Budapest.
