NATO is considering a new €70 billion aid package for Ukraine – Politico

NATO countries are considering the idea of allocating a new €70 billion military aid package to Ukraine, which could be announced as early as next month at the alliance’s summit in Ankara, Turkey. According to the PromPolitInform portal, Politico reports.

According to four NATO diplomats, Germany made such a proposal in May. In addition to funding, the proposal would include a new mechanism to more transparently track contributions.

This comes amid complaints from some countries that they are disproportionately bearing the costs of supporting Kyiv.

“The key point is to get a firm commitment from Ankara to continue providing Ukraine with much-needed support on a sustainable and more equitable basis,” a fifth senior NATO diplomat added.

According to the publication, the 70 billion euros in funding will not consist only of new funds. About 30 billion euros will come from the already agreed EU two-year loan to Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros, and another 40 billion euros will be allocated through bilateral support programs.

However, some fear that countries may feel less need for their donations if they can count on EU funds.

Politico also noted that support for Ukraine will be one of the key issues that will be discussed at the NATO leaders’ summit on July 7-8.

For her part, Ukraine’s ambassador to NATO, Aliona Getmanchuk, told the publication that any new commitments should focus on Kyiv’s priorities, such as air defense, investment, the production of drones and missiles, as well as long-range ammunition.
