The Pantheon will be a publicly accessible memorial complex and will be located in Kyiv.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has given the green light to a large-scale project to perpetuate national memory. On Wednesday, July 1, the parliament adopted as a basis and in general, bill No. 15360 on the creation of the Ukrainian National Pantheon. According to Glavred, 287 people’s deputies voted for the decision, as reported by parliamentarian Yaroslav Zheleznyak. The PromPolitInform portal informs.
The initiative to create the memorial belongs to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who submitted the relevant document to the Rada a few days earlier – on June 28, on the Constitution Day of Ukraine.
What will the Ukrainian Pantheon be like?
The new memorial complex will appear in Kyiv and will be fully accessible to the public. The visual design of the pantheon will be selected based on the results of an open competition, and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine will be the customer of the work. At the same time, the construction, protection and further maintenance of the memorial complex will be carried out exclusively at the expense of the state budget.
The pantheon will have a special legal status. Its purpose is to honor the most outstanding figures who made an exceptional historical contribution to the acquisition, restoration and development of Ukrainian independence, army, culture, science, language and civil society.
Who exactly will be honored in the memorial
According to the text of the law, representatives of six key categories of persons will receive the right to be immortalized in the pantheon:
Rulers of historical eras: heads of state or persons equated to them from the times of Rus, the Russian Kingdom, the Hetmanate (Zaporozhian Army), the UNR, the ZUNR, the Ukrainian State and Carpathian Ukraine.
Presidents of Ukraine: all heads of modern state, except for those who were removed from office in accordance with the established procedure.
Historical commanders: commanders-in-chief and leaders of the armed forces of the UNR and the Ukrainian Galician Army (UGA).
Modern military leaders: commanders-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the country’s war for independence.
