The Swiss government will allocate 600,000 francs, equivalent to 730,000 dollars, for the repair and protection of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following a Russian strike. The funding will be channeled through UNESCO mechanisms.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Валерія Абабіна), according to the portal PromPolitInform.
International aid is aimed at addressing the aftermath of the attack that occurred on June 15. At that time, a Russian drone struck the Dormition Cathedral, resulting in a fire that damaged frescoes, paintings, and the iconostasis.
The allocation of funds was announced by the Swiss government delegate to Ukraine, Jacques Gerber, during events dedicated to the 975th anniversary of the shrine. The details of the project’s implementation were discussed with the participation of Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.
Cooperation with international partners
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha described this step as an important show of solidarity against the backdrop of russia’s attempts to destroy Ukraine’s cultural heritage. According to him, joint efforts will ensure the preservation of the site for future generations.
Previously, emergency repairs were already carried out at the site of the incident. Specifically, within a week after the shelling, rescuers repaired the roof of the complex’s main cathedral, which is a World Heritage site.
