As a result of the attack and explosions in Myla, 37 people died and 130 houses were destroyed
The tragedy in the village of Myla, Bucha district, Kyiv region, which occurred on the evening of August 28, 2026, has once again brought to the agenda the chronic contradiction between defense instructions and their practical implementation. A Russian airstrike caused a massive detonation of shells, mines, and drones stored at a Defense Forces facility in immediate proximity to civilian buildings. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a special statement and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his Telegram channel reported on the tragic incident and the death of 37 civilians.
As President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his address, the storage of explosive substances near residential areas is an unacceptable violation of safety protocols. The head of state emphasized that the destruction and detonation were the result of negligence by those responsible. It is noteworthy that a similar incident was previously officially recorded in Vyshneve. The General Staff of the ZSU, while mentioning the root cause — the aggression of the Russian Federation — also confirmed the existence of a standing order from the Commander-in-Chief of the ZSU that strictly prohibits the establishment of weapon arsenals near locations where civilians reside.
The scale of the consequences of ignoring internal directives proved critical for the village infrastructure. As the Head of the National Police of Ukraine Ivan Vyhivskyi noted in his Telegram channel, about 130 residential houses suffered varying degrees of damage due to the ammunition explosions, four people are considered missing, and approximately 400 local residents had to be urgently evacuated from the danger zone. Rescuers had to deblock over 10 more citizens from basements. Specialized units and equipment from four regions of the country were involved in extinguishing fire outbreaks and dealing with the emergency situation.
The legal assessment of the actions of officials who allowed such a location has moved into the realm of a criminal investigation. According to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the SBU, and the ZSU command have received clear instructions to conduct a thorough investigation into the events. Simultaneously, Head of the National Police of Ukraine Ivan Vyhivskyi reported that law enforcement officers have already questioned about 40 witnesses and victims as part of proceedings regarding official negligence. Investigators have seized physical evidence and sent it for expert analysis to establish the chain of decisions that led to the ignoring of safety orders issued by the military command.
