Restrictions will affect insurance, banking services, and the energy sector
The United Kingdom has announced plans to increase sanctions pressure on vessels and companies operating in Iran's interests. The decision was officially announced by the Minister for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty. This was reported by USM — ports and shipping, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The government document presented in Parliament grants London broader powers to influence maritime transport supporting Tehran’s nuclear program or destabilizing activities. New restrictions apply not only to the vessels themselves but also to supporting services, including banking, insurance, and logistics management.
Energy and Technology Restrictions
Beyond the shipping sector, British authorities are introducing trade bans on several categories of goods and services. This includes energy resources, metals, gold, and software used to support the Iranian economy.
Under the new sanctions regime, the government has provided for a special licensing mechanism. These permits allow for the continuation of operations related to the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan, which supplies energy resources to European countries.
Maritime Security Context
The tightening of British policy occurs against a backdrop of declining shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic volumes in the region have hit their lowest levels since May following regional escalation and reciprocal strikes on maritime vessels.
