Rescuers evacuated 16 people from the shelling zone on the border with Moldova
The night drone attack on the international automobile checkpoint “Starokozache,” located on the Ukraine-Moldova border, has become further evidence of the expanding geography of Russian targets. According to the Odesa Regional State Administration, the drone strikes resulted in the death of two civilians, while three others sustained injuries of varying severity. The destruction of infrastructure and surrounding areas caused fires among the complex’s facilities.
The immediate consequence of the attack was the complete cessation of operations at the border crossing. While specialized services work to mitigate the emergency, and rescuers have promptly evacuated 16 people from the danger zone by bus, the Ukrainian side has officially informed neighboring Moldova about the security restrictions.
Scale of the overnight combined strike
The shelling of the border hub in the Odesa region was part of a broader wave of strikes across the country. According to information from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy deployed 196 strike drones during the massive attack, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Parodia decoy models, launched from areas in Oryol, Kursk, the temporarily occupied Crimea, and the Donetsk region. The assault also involved the use of Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S8000 Banderol missiles.
Ukrainian Defense Forces, through the deployment of aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire teams, and electronic warfare assets, successfully shot down or suppressed 165 enemy drones. However, the impact of missiles and drones was recorded at 23 locations, and in four instances, damage was caused by falling debris from destroyed targets. Simultaneously, the office of the television channel “My – Ukraina” in Kyiv came under fire, resulting in injuries to five people who were live on air at the time of the attack.
Assessment by the European Union
The focus of strikes on logistics and media outlets has triggered an unequivocal diplomatic response. Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova has publicly qualified the attacks on journalists and border infrastructure as war crimes. The diplomat emphasized that such actions demonstrate a systemic disregard for international law and an attempt to isolate Ukraine from the outside world.
From a strategic perspective, the attack on the “Starokozache” checkpoint marks a transition toward systematic pressure on cross-border corridors that connect Ukraine with its European neighbors. Striking civilian customs infrastructure in a remote southern section of the border indicates an intention to create tension within logistical chains and complicate passenger and freight transit.
