The suspect was detained directly during an attempt to cross the border
Law enforcement officers detained a man in Zakarpattia who organized a channel for the illegal departure of conscripts to Hungary for $12,000. The suspect was served a notice of suspicion and remanded in custody. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police of Ukraine.
Operatives of the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police in Zakarpattia Region, together with investigators from the Mukachevo District Police Department and border guards, exposed the illegal activity. The organizer of the scheme sought out men wishing to leave Ukraine due to conscription age and arranged their arrival by train to Berehove.
Organization of temporary accommodation
Upon arrival in the city, clients were accommodated in a hotel where they awaited further movement to the border zone. The organizer estimated his services at 12,000 US dollars, and payment was to be made immediately before crossing the state border.
Documenting the meeting
Law enforcement officers recorded the meeting between the suspect and the customer in a hotel room in Berehove. During the conversation, the perpetrator wearing a balaclava conducted a briefing and checked the client’s personal belongings.
Detention of the offender
Police detained the suspect pursuant to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine at the moment of attempting to smuggle a person across the state border to a neighboring country. The court has already satisfied the motion to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention.
Offense qualification
The actions of the detainee are qualified under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine regarding the illegal transportation of persons across the state border. The sanction of the article provides for up to nine years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Involved units
The operation was carried out in cooperation with the personnel of the 27th Border Guard Detachment named after the Heroes of the Carpathian Sich of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Procedural guidance in the criminal proceedings is carried out by the Mukachevo District Prosecutor’s Office.
