A tough package of restrictions could be enacted after the US midterm elections
If the Democratic Party wins the upcoming US congressional midterms, it could lead to the adoption of 'hellish sanctions' against Russia. Senator Thom Tillis stated this during a press briefing in Kyiv. He referenced a sanctions draft previously initiated by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Едуард Ткач) citing Thom Tillis, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Assessing potential shifts in the political landscape following the vote, the American politician highlighted past support for sanctions initiatives in the upper house of the US legislature.
Support levels in the US Senate
According to the senator, previous voting on restrictions against Russia can serve as a benchmark, given that 86 US senators supported the initiative. He emphasized that securing around 80 votes typically signals strong consensus within the chamber.
“Whenever you have an issue that reaches around 80, that is usually considered broadly supported. I think that is a good benchmark for support in the US Senate, and it would withstand any minor changes in the Senate,” Thom Tillis said.
House of Representatives and voter alignment
The lawmaker also indicated that following the elections, a vote on the sanctions will take place in the House of Representatives as well. A decisive outcome in that vote would demonstrate that the US Congress maintains its commitment to supporting Ukraine.
In the senator’s view, such legislative actions fully align with the sentiments of American voters. “So I believe the American people strongly support this. Members of Congress tend to represent their constituents, and when they don’t, they tend to get kicked out,” Thom Tillis concluded.
