The Polish Prime Minister plans to discuss sanctions pressure on Russia and assess the state of energy infrastructure
Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk has announced a scheduled visit to Ukraine on September 18. During the trip, he will meet with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and examine the impact of Russian shelling on the energy system. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
As part of the upcoming trip, the Polish Prime Minister intends to hold talks with the head of the Slovak government, Robert Fico. The announcement regarding the visit was made during a joint press conference in Warsaw with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker.
Consultations on EU sanctions
The head of the Polish government emphasized that Warsaw continues to insist on expanding sanctions pressure on Russia. Work is currently underway at the European Union level to form the 22nd package of restrictive measures.
Donald Tusk expressed surprise at France’s position on this issue, while describing Slovakia as a state that traditionally demonstrates caution regarding the introduction of sanctions. At the same time, the politician noted that following the recent meeting of Visegrad Group leaders in Bratislava, he remains optimistic about the consolidated position of these countries.
Energy security and provocations
Commenting on the call by US President Donald Trump to cease attacks on energy infrastructure, Tusk noted that expectations for a de-escalation have not been met. According to the Prime Minister, Russian strikes have become more frequent and dangerous, moving closer to the Polish border.
Polish authorities predict that the intensity of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities will increase as winter approaches. Donald Tusk emphasized that Poland does not view Moscow’s diplomatic assurances as a sign of changing its actual intentions.
Readiness for escalation
Warsaw is preparing for various scenarios, as the risk of provocations from Russia remains high. The Polish military has already been forced to scramble fighter jets due to Russian strikes on western regions of Ukraine, causing a temporary suspension of operations at the airports in Lublin and Rzeszow.
The Prime Minister concluded that the country’s strategy is based solely on facts, not on expectations of goodwill from the Russian side. He personally plans to assess the state of Ukraine’s infrastructure during his visit to gain a realistic understanding of the consequences of the military actions.
