Remaining funds from the SAFE program will be directed to new joint defense projects
The European Union plans to allocate €3.3 billion to Ukraine on September 18 as part of a regular defense aid package to purchase missiles and drones. This was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was reported by Ukrinform citing European Commission, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The head of the European institution emphasized solidarity with Ukrainians amidst regular Russian strikes on Kyiv aimed at making everyday life unbearable for residents. She reminded about last week’s EU financing approval for Patriot systems within the framework of the loan to support Ukraine.
Joint Defense Projects
To further bolster support, the European Commission is ready to utilize remaining funds from the SAFE program to launch new joint EU-Ukraine defense projects. The goal is to jointly develop a European air and missile defense system relying on the Freya ballistic countermeasure network.
This initiative will combine Ukraine’s combat experience and innovations with Europe’s technological and industrial potential. Additionally, the parties discussed reforms that need to be approved in the Verkhovna Rada to unlock further funding and continue the integration path.
UN General Assembly Address
Next week, von der Leyen will attend the UN General Assembly in New York to deliver a message that Europe is stepping up its efforts while others must also intensify support. Meanwhile, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU Member States preliminarily approved five joint European defense projects with €60 million in funding each.
