Elon Musk clarifies control over Starlink and Starshield systems

The US government independently determines the operating conditions for the military Starshield network

Elon Musk stated that SpaceX has no influence over the operations of the Starshield system, as its usage is controlled by the US military and the President of the United States. He also emphasized that the use of the commercial Starlink network for offensive military operations is prohibited. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has provided clarification regarding the division of responsibilities in managing satellite networks. He emphasized that Starshield is a separate structure under the authority of the United States government.

Separation of powers and objectives

According to Musk, final decisions regarding speed limits or specific operational parameters for the Starshield network are made by high-level military command and the White House. This distinguishes the state project from the commercial Starlink system, where corporate policy remains under the responsibility of SpaceX.

Regarding the civilian version of the service, Musk noted that its use is strictly limited to defense or peaceful purposes. He stated that using these capabilities for offensive military operations would be unacceptable for a commercial company.

Impact of restrictions on the Defense Forces

Previously, information surfaced in the Ukrainian media that SpaceX had implemented speed restrictions for terminals while in motion. Experts pointed out that Ukrainian units had not received any warnings regarding changes to the settings.

Sources within the Ministry of Defence confirmed that such technical obstacles negatively affect the efficiency of logistics and the performance of unmanned systems. In addition to data transmission issues, the military was forced to cancel some planned missions due to intermittent connectivity.
