Politicians’ peace initiatives: Taras Stetskiv warns of the threat of societal division

Discussions on negotiations with the RF could become a tool for Ukraine's internal destabilization

Taras Stetskiv, a five-term Member of Parliament, has labeled current calls by politicians for negotiations with the RF as dangerous. He believes such initiatives could provoke a rift in Ukraine and align with the Kremlin's strategic objectives. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Former parliamentarian Taras Stetskiv, in an interview with Natalia Moseichuk, expressed concern regarding statements made by Oleksii Honcharenko, Danylo Hetmantsev, and Anna Skorokhod. He noted that promoting ideas of peace pushes Volodymyr Zelenskyy toward politically perilous decisions that could be perceived as a betrayal of national interests.

The goal of the Kremlin strategy

Stetskiv is convinced that the emergence of a discussion around negotiations is part of an RF plan aimed at polarizing Ukrainian society. The politician believes the Russian leadership seeks to pit those who advocate for continued defense against those who favor a swift end to hostilities.

Moscow may only demonstrate readiness for dialogue after creating domestic political tension within Ukraine. However, the initiation of a negotiation process does not guarantee peace, as the Russian side is capable of issuing additional ultimatums under the threat of resuming the active phase of the war.

Risks for the diplomatic position

There is a possibility that Western partners might begin considering the easing of sanctions against the RF as soon as Kyiv enters into negotiations. In such a scenario, the president would find himself in a situation where any choice leads to a new wave of public outrage and internal confrontation.

Stetskiv emphasized that Putin is not seeking real peace but is instead using the mere potential for discussion as a means to undermine the resilience of the Ukrainian state. He warned against attempts to reduce everything to a simple binary of “peace” versus “war,” as such a narrative benefits only the enemy.

Consequences for the individuals involved

Recall that on October 2, Oleksii Honcharenko proposed lifting sanctions on the RF in exchange for stopping long-range strikes and unblocking the Black Sea, which led to his expulsion from the European Solidarity faction on October 5. Meanwhile, on October 6, Anna Skorokhod called for enshrining Ukraine’s neutral status in the Constitution, which was actively promoted by Russian media.
