Dutch Army Commander calls for rapid preparation for future warfare

The Future of War conference is taking place at a naval complex in Amsterdam

General Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defence of the Netherlands, has stressed the need for closer cooperation between the military, academics, and practitioners. Speaking at the Future of War event in Amsterdam, he urged for faster innovation and the preservation of independent critical thinking. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The gathering brings together military leaders, researchers, and experts to exchange knowledge and analyse how changes in warfare will impact society. The programme covers the application of artificial intelligence, space technologies, cognitive warfare, and European deterrence. Special attention is also given to leadership, informed decision-making, and military accountability.

Technologies and critical assessment

«I urge you to cooperate with the Ministry of Defence to help us understand the challenges ahead of us», General Eichelsheim stated during his address. He emphasised the importance of translating academic knowledge into practical solutions for those who need them most. According to the official, the primary objective is to learn faster, innovate faster, and act faster.

At the same time, the Chief of Defence noted that speed must never replace critical evaluation, nor should technology become an excuse to abandon responsibility. Although it is impossible to predict what future warfare will look like, armed forces can prepare for it technologically, intellectually, and morally. He concluded that nations must act with greater speed without ever ceasing to think independently.
