Pentagon urges Baltic states to moderate rhetoric regarding Russia

US officials believe that harsh rhetoric from European leaders may jeopardize regional security

Pentagon representatives have approached Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with requests to soften public comments regarding the threat posed by Russia. US officials argue that certain statements by European leaders could undermine the security of the continent. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine (Тетяна Степанова) citing Reuters, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The department is convinced that specific remarks from European officials concerning Russia’s desperate situation amidst the slowing pace of its invasion of Ukraine do not contribute to stability. As an example of counterproductive communication, the US side cited European comparisons of Russia to a “rat backed into a corner.”

Communication with Baltic partners was handled, among others, by Elbridge Colby, the head of the Pentagon’s policy department. He plays a key role in the ongoing review of the number of American troops deployed on the European continent.

During discussions with Baltic representatives, Colby warned against provocative rhetoric. Specifically, during a meeting with an Estonian delegation, the request was made to maintain restraint when assessing Moscow’s actions.

Sources noted that while the advice was delivered in a friendly tone, it nonetheless caused surprise among European officials.

Context of European security policy

The Pentagon’s stance emerged amid active discussions among European leaders regarding future threats. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently warned against complacency, pointing to the Russian leadership’s intent to undermine democratic institutions.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also warned of the risk of a major escalation in Russia’s hybrid aggression against Europe. Meanwhile, British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting urged preparations for potential military confrontation with Russia by 2030.

Vladimir Putin, for his part, claimed that Russia is prepared for conflict with Europe while simultaneously declaring no desire for war. Russia has also stated a readiness to support steps toward restoring relations with European countries.
