On Thursday, January 29, within the framework of the Istanbul agreements, another 1,000 bodies were returned to Ukraine, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian defenders. This was reported by Slovo i Dilo, citing the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, as conveyed by the PromPolitInform portal.
“Today, repatriation measures took place as part of their implementation, during which 1,000 bodies (remains) of the deceased were returned to Ukraine, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian defenders. Investigators from law enforcement agencies, together with expert institutions of Ukraine, will carry out all necessary procedures aimed at identifying the repatriated fallen,” the statement said.
It is noted that the repatriation measures were conducted with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
As a reminder, the previous exchange of bodies of fallen servicemen under the Istanbul agreements took place on December 19.
Earlier in October, another prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia also took place. As a result, 185 fighters from various frontline areas were returned home, including defenders of Mariupol and the Azovstal plant.
The Coordination Headquarters also recently reported that over the past year, 2,080 military personnel and 230 civilian Ukrainians were returned from Russian captivity — nearly 1,000 more people than in 2024.
