Trump to discuss US withdrawal from NATO with Rutte today – White House

Can the American leader carry out threats to withdraw from the Alliance?

US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO. He will discuss this issue with the Alliance’s Secretary General Mark Rutte. As RBC-Ukraine reports, this was stated at a briefing by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt. The PromPolitInform portal reports.

The journalist asked Leavitt whether the US was still considering the possibility of withdrawing from the North Atlantic Alliance.

“The president discussed this issue, and I think the president will discuss it in a few hours with Secretary General Rutte. Perhaps after this meeting, which will take place later this afternoon, you will hear comments directly from the president,” she replied.

Trump’s Threats

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump has begun sharply criticizing NATO because the allies refused to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to unblock its work at his request.

The American leader has repeatedly compared the Alliance to a “paper tiger” and has also accused the allies of cowardice.

According to Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not be afraid of NATO if the US withdraws from it.

He also warned that he is ready to consider the US withdrawal from the Alliance. In his opinion, the US can cope with all threats on its own.

In response to such threats, French President Emmanuel Macron advised his American counterpart to talk less. As Macron noted, Trump’s words call into question the US’s commitments.
