The full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine differs significantly from the wars of the last century. It has become more technological, giving rise to new terms, new roles, and new types of weaponry. To explain their meaning and to revisit important terms from past wars, the editorial team of Prompolitinform is launching a new section called “War Alphabet.” Today, we introduce a new term in the military lexicon — UAV spotter.
Who is a UAV spotter and what does he do in war?
A UAV spotter is a key member of a strike drone crew (FPV or bomber drone), responsible for preparing munitions, equipping drones with payloads, and setting up the ground control station. This role ensures the combat readiness of the drone, involves handling explosives (often performing duties similar to an ordnance specialist), and operates in close coordination with the pilot.
Key functions and responsibilities of a spotter:
-
Munition preparation: selecting and adapting explosive devices for specific missions.
-
Drone outfitting: securely attaching munitions to the drone and checking release systems.
-
Safety: ensuring safe handling of explosives at the position.
-
Speed: ability to bring the drone to combat readiness within minutes.
The spotter works directly with the pilot, allowing the latter to focus entirely on controlling the drone.
