At the G7 summit in Evian, France, Ukraine was among the main topics on the agenda – and this time the discussion is not about losses or the crisis, but about the fact that the situation on the front is gradually changing in favor of Kyiv. This, Mind writes, is reported by Reuters observers. The PromPolitInform portal informs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already held talks with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the summit. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated in the meeting with them.
After the conversation, Zelensky published a joint photo and briefly summarized the negotiations: “It is always important to coordinate positions.”
Before the meeting with the Ukrainian president, Trump told reporters that the war should end through negotiations. “Russia must make a deal,” the American president said.
According to him, the day before, he spoke with Russian dictator Putin and once again emphasized the need to end the war.
After the closed-door meeting of the G7 leaders, Zelensky gave a long interview to Reuters, in which he reported on the results of the negotiations. According to the Ukrainian president, Trump responded positively to the issue of additional assistance to Ukrainian air defense.
“President Trump was very positive about the fact that the United States can help Ukraine with additional missiles for air defense systems,” Zelensky said.
This is critically important for Kyiv, because in recent months Russia has regularly carried out massive combined attacks with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles.
Another important signal for Ukraine is the discussion of a new package of sanctions.
According to Zelensky, the G7 leaders spoke about increasing pressure on Russia in several areas at once, including the energy sector, the banking system, and the military industry.
The president also noted that all participants in the summit agreed that Russia would not win the war and would ultimately be forced to seek a political solution.
One of the most resonant statements of the summit was the words of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, after a closed discussion on Ukraine she wrote on the social network: “The course of events is starting to change in favor of Ukraine.”
This assessment is also confirmed by European diplomats who were present at the meeting. According to them, for the first time in a long time, there was a feeling among the G7 leaders that it was Russia that was now forced to respond to Ukraine’s actions, and not vice versa. One of the reasons for this mood was the recent successes of Ukrainian long-range drones, writes Reuters.
The summit participants actively discussed attacks on Russian airfields, warehouses and oil refineries, as well as strikes on the occupiers’ logistics via the so-called land corridor to Crimea.
European officials point out that it is Ukrainian drones that have become the main tool for exhausting the Russian military machine in 2026.
Zelenskyy has a number of bilateral meetings with the leaders of the G7 countries ahead. The main issues for Ukraine remain unchanged: additional missiles for air defense, new sanctions against Russia, financing of the Ukrainian defense industry and the production of drones.
As Politico wrote the day before, Ukraine will win the drone war – now it needs to win Trump’s favor. The Russians are advancing more slowly than their warehouses are burning, and Kyiv will now not beg at the G7 summit, but convince.
