Ukraine and Sweden have signed an agreement to purchase 16 new Gripen E fighters

Ukraine and Sweden have officially signed an agreement to purchase 16 new generation Gripen E multi-role fighters, which also includes the supply of related equipment, logistical support and technical assistance. UA.NEWS reports this, the PromPolitInform portal reports.

The delivery of aircraft of this modification will begin in early 2029, and the purchase will be financed by a loan from the European Union and with the support of the United Kingdom.

In parallel, clear deadlines for the transfer of previous generation aircraft were confirmed. Within the framework of previously reached bilateral agreements with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the first 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets will be transferred free of charge to the Ukrainian Air Force as military aid in early 2027. Currently, the process of training Ukrainian military pilots and technical personnel has already been organized and is actively underway in Sweden.

In the presence of the Head of State Volodymyr Zelensky and the Swedish Minister of Defense Poul Jönsson, the document was signed by Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Serhiy Boev and Director General of the Swedish Defense Materials Administration (FMV) Mikael Granholm. In addition to the aviation contract, during the meeting the parties discussed joint work on the development of European anti-ballistic defense, Sweden’s participation in the PURL program and the preparation of a future large-scale agreement in the field of unmanned systems (Drone Deal).
