Danish defense company BlueShadow plans to deploy the BlueDragon maritime anti-drone system in Ukraine in the spring of 2027. It should be certified by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine by the end of this year, said the company’s CEO Charles Maher in an interview published on Friday, August 7. The system is reportedly supposed to intercept Russian Shahed strike drones over the Black Sea — before they reach Odessa and other Ukrainian coastal infrastructure.
“We are moving exactly on schedule. We are targeting certification from the Ministry of Defense in the fourth quarter of 2026, and delivery, training of personnel and achieving initial operational readiness in the spring of 2027,” Maher said.
The system will protect ports from attacks from the sea
According to Maher, BlueDragon was developed primarily to protect the Black Sea coast of Ukraine, in particular the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhne.
The system should create an interception zone at sea, where drones can be destroyed before they approach ports, coastal cities and critical infrastructure.
According to Maher, BlueDragon will also help protect shipping corridors and Danube ports and should become a “sea shield” from drone attacks.
More than 10 Ukrainian companies have joined the project
According to Maher, more than 10 Ukrainian technology companies are already participating in the BlueDragon project.
The basis of the system is BlueShadowCore, an open software platform that can be quickly connected to new radars, sensors, and interceptors.
Maher also noted that BlueShadow deliberately abandoned Chinese-made components and works only with proven partners, including Ukrainian manufacturers.
There is interest in the technology outside Ukraine
According to Maher, BlueShadow has already held talks with neighboring countries in the Black Sea region. Interest in this technology outside Ukraine is growing.
The company is also in talks with Gulf states that are looking for similar systems to protect ports, shipping lanes, and critical infrastructure from drones.
What is BlueDragon?
BlueDragon is a maritime anti-drone system being developed by the Danish defense company BlueShadow. It is designed to intercept air targets before they reach coastal facilities.
The system does not rely solely on ground-based air defense systems. It uses autonomous surface platforms equipped with sensors, radars and interceptor drones to detect, track and destroy Shahed drones flying over the Black Sea towards the Ukrainian coast.
BlueShadow explains that the system is not tied to the equipment of a single manufacturer: it can combine Ukrainian sensors and weapons with European technologies.
BlueDragon is designed to protect ports, shipping lanes and coastal infrastructure. In the future, the technology can also be adapted to protect merchant ships in dangerous waters.
