Researchers develop diamond nuclear battery with 5,700-year lifespan

Scientists from the University of Bristol have created a prototype nuclear power source using carbon-14 isotopes within synthetic diamond. The device is capable of generating energy for 5,700 years without recharging. This was reported by Futura citing University of Bristol, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The technology involves the use of radioactive carbon-14, which is recovered from graphite blocks removed from nuclear reactors. The isotope is encased inside a synthetic diamond that acts as both a radiation shield and a semiconductor.

Operating principle and safety

During decay, carbon-14 releases electrons that move through the diamond’s crystal structure, generating a steady electrical current. The process resembles solar cell operation, where atomic decay replaces sunlight as the energy source.

According to Professor Tom Scott, this design keeps radiation internally contained, making the battery safe for external use. Since the power output is in the microwatt range, it is not intended for consumer electronics or electric vehicles.

Application prospects

The development is focused on fields where maintenance or battery replacement is impractical or dangerous. This includes medical implants, sensors for remote infrastructure, and hardware for space missions.

The technology is currently at the prototype stage, yet it demonstrates a method for converting radioactive waste into a useful energy asset. Researchers are exploring commercial partnerships and the necessary regulatory approval processes.
