Ukrainian courts to hear 34 war crime cases from August 17–21, 2026

Throughout the coming working week, courts in Ukraine will process 34 proceedings initiated under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. These cases involve violations of the laws and customs of war.

This was reported by Book of Torturers, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

During the court sessions scheduled for the period from August 17 to August 21, 2026, materials related to the activities of individuals involved in crimes against civilians and prisoners of war will be reviewed.

Focus on accountability for war crimes

Recently, the Ukrainian judicial system has intensified the consideration of cases under Article 438 of the Criminal Code. Specifically, in Dnipro, a rifleman from the Russian 114th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade was sentenced to 12 years in prison for committing sexual violence against a female civilian.

Also, a Kherson court issued an in absentia verdict against an FSB of the Russian Federation colonel for torturing residents of Nova Kakhovka. The defendant received a 12-year prison sentence on these charges.

Investigations against criminals and occupation authorities

Efforts to document the actions of occupation administration officials and Russian security forces continue. The Security Service of Ukraine has announced charges against the head of the occupation authorities in the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, and local “military commissars” for the forced conscription of Ukrainian citizens.

In parallel, investigative bodies have recorded acts of violence at a colony in Horlivka, where two penitentiary system employees have been charged with abusing Ukrainian captives.
