Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained two foreign citizens who set fire to an energy facility in Chernivtsi on russia's orders. The perpetrators attempted to destroy an electrical substation powering critical infrastructure in the city. This was reported by Ukrinform citing Security Service of Ukraine, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Recruitment of the perpetrators was carried out through internet resources where they were looking for quick earnings. After agreeing on the terms, the individuals arrived at the regional center and conducted reconnaissance of the area.
Having completed preliminary reconnaissance along the perimeter, the saboteurs poured flammable liquid over the transformers and set them on fire. Officers of the Ukrainian special service identified them and detained the criminals within a day.
Law enforcement officers qualified the actions of the detainees under articles concerning attempted sabotage under martial law.
Currently, both suspects are in custody. They face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
