The aircraft was successfully tested in Linkoping with pilots from both nations
Saab has conducted the first successful test flight of the two-seat Gripen F fighter model. During the 40-minute test in the Swedish skies, experts verified the core systems and initial flight performance of the new aircraft. This was reported by Saab, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
The aircraft took off on 28 August 2026 from the Saab airfield in Linkoping. The crew included the developer’s chief test pilot Jakob Hogberg and Brazilian Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Aviator Abdon de Rezende Vasconcelos.
This aircraft is the result of a strategic partnership between Sweden and Brazil. It was developed with the aim of optimising pilot training and increasing operational efficiency during complex combat missions.
Testing stages and technological cooperation
At the current stage, the programme is entering a phase of progressive flight envelope expansion. Experts will evaluate the aircraft’s speed, altitude, G-load, and angle of attack capabilities step by step. Separate attention will also be paid to the rear cockpit functionality, which is adapted for specific training and tactical control needs.
The fighter’s creation took place within a large-scale technology transfer programme. More than 350 Brazilian engineers and technical experts underwent training, allowing them to take direct part in designing and maintaining this Gripen version. As the customer, Brazil also joined the joint development of the two-seat variant.
The test campaign will be conducted under the supervision of Saab specialists in Sweden. Once all necessary aircraft acceptance procedures are completed, the fighter will be delivered to the Brazilian Air Force.
