Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN Riklef Boitin called for the immediate return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during UN General Assembly debates. The diplomat also stressed the inadmissibility of torturing prisoners. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
During the general debates at the UN General Assembly focused on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, German representative Riklef Boitin highlighted numerous violations of international law by the aggressor. The diplomat specifically addressed the practice of deporting Ukrainian minors, identifying it as a war crime.
“Illegal deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children are gross violations of international law and are equivalent to crimes against humanity,” Boitin emphasized. He called for the unconditional return of all abducted children to their families or legal guardians.
Treatment of Prisoners of War
In addition to the issue of deportation, Germany expressed deep concern over the treatment of Ukrainian military personnel and civilians who are being illegally held in detention by the rf. Citing reports from UN human rights monitoring missions, the Berlin representative confirmed the existence of a systematic pattern of torture and cruel treatment.
Boitin demanded that the Russian side immediately cease the use of torture. He also stressed the need to ensure proper conditions of detention for captives and provide them with quality medical assistance.
Sexual Violence
The Permanent Representative of Germany highlighted the use of sexual violence as a tool of warfare. According to him, the rf uses such actions to terrorize the civilian population and humiliate prisoners.
“Sexual violence has been used to terrorize and humiliate, punish and intimidate Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war,” the diplomat added. Riklef Boitin stressed that all individuals responsible for these crimes must be held accountable, and victims must have access to necessary assistance and justice.
