Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhen Khmara discussed strengthening Ukraine's air defence system with French Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Catherine Vautrin. The dialogue also touched upon countering jet-powered Shahed drones and joint defence projects. This is reported by the portal PromPolitInform, citing information from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian and French sides reviewed further steps to strengthen airspace protection. In particular, the officials addressed the supply of ammunition for Mirage fighter jets.
Yevhen Khmara expressed gratitude to the French side for the prompt delivery of additional air defence assets and consistent support. The head of the defence ministry emphasised the critical importance of partner assistance in countering aerial threats.
Combating Jet Drones
Countering jet-powered Shahed drones was a specific focus of the talks. Ukraine and France are currently working to find effective technical solutions to destroy such unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Ukrainian side expressed interest both in receiving additional supplies of already proven assets and in developing new solutions. Cheap interceptor drones were highlighted as one of the key priorities.
Defence Industry Cooperation
Furthermore, the heads of the ministries discussed the implementation of joint projects in the defence manufacturing sector. The FREYJA anti-ballistic initiative was also on the agenda.
The Minister of Defence of Ukraine thanked the French partners for their consistent support and readiness to further deepen the bilateral defence partnership.
