US Congress Members Initiate Total Ban on Russian Oil Imports

The Ronald Reagan Act is planned to be brought to a vote bypassing committee procedures

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick is developing a legislative act aimed at completely blocking the purchase of oil products from Russia. To ensure its adoption, the plan is to use the Discharge Petition procedure, which has already secured the necessary 218 votes. This was reported by Glavcom, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick has presented an initiative titled the “Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act.” The main goal of this project is to implement an absolute ban on any procurement operations involving Russian energy resources.

Legislative procedure

To bypass standard bureaucratic barriers, such as the positions of the relevant committee and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the author of the initiative intends to use the Discharge Petition mechanism. The politician stated that he already has the support of 218 lawmakers, which allows for the document to be brought directly to a floor vote.

Diplomatic context and Washington’s stance

This initiative emerged amidst reports of US demands for Kyiv to cease strikes on Russian oil refineries. Washington reportedly threatened to halt the sharing of critical intelligence if such attacks continued.

Meanwhile, peace talks involving representatives from the US, Ukraine, and NATO in Florida concluded prematurely. During the meetings, it was revealed that the administration of Donald Trump intends to lift sanctions on Russian diesel fuel.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff previously described the talks as constructive. The participants discussed de-escalation measures, security guarantees for Ukraine, and the resilience of the energy system ahead of the winter season.
