Railway grain transportation to Great Odesa ports dropped by half

Danube ports are increasing performance despite a general slowdown in agro-export rates

During the first 20 days of October, the volume of grain cargo delivered by rail to the ports of Great Odesa fell to 9.8 thousand tons. A month earlier, during the same period, the figure was 20.8 thousand tons. This was reported by USM — ports and shipping citing the Telegram channel of Spike Brokers, according to the portal PromPolitInform.

The dynamics of deliveries to Odesa terminals show a negative trend, while the Danube direction shows opposite results. Transportation volumes to Danube ports, including Izmail and Reni, grew by 20% compared to September figures, reaching 151 thousand tons.

Shifting grain export logistics routes

The total volume of rail grain shipments for the 20 days of October amounted to 1.054 million tons, which exceeds September data by 13.4% but remains 30.6% lower than last year’s volumes. Average daily loading rates are currently 8% lower than in the previous month and 46% lower than the figures for the same period last year.

Export shipments of grain for the same period amounted to 675.9 thousand tons, an increase of 23.5% compared to September, although a year-on-year decline of 45.3% is observed. The majority of cargo, 81.2%, moved through land borders, while ports handled 127.2 thousand tons.

Danube and western border dynamics

Road transport to Danube ports shows a slowdown, decreasing by approximately 20% between October 1 and 22. The total volume of road delivery to these facilities reached 779.3 thousand tons, with wheat accounting for a significant share of 518.6 thousand tons.

Performance at the western border remains stable, with average daily grain transfer through the main directions reaching 340 wagons compared to 324.2 in the September report. The accumulation of rail cars at the border has seen almost no change, standing at 4,373 wagons as of October 21.

Impact on agricultural prices

Total agro-exports for the three weeks of October are estimated at 2.172 million tons valued at $1.139 billion, reflecting growth of 4.8% and 8% respectively compared to September. However, there is an 17.8% drop in the average daily export intensity over the current week.

Price trends at port bases are characterized by a decline: CPT Odesa corn has fallen to $160 per ton, while wheat prices range between $155 and $170 depending on the class. Meanwhile, the price gap between Chop and Odesa has widened to $40 due to stable prices for FCA Chop corn at $200.
