Russian leadership needs to fabricate a victory to maintain its own legitimacy
Security analyst Sitki Egeli stated that Russia has lost its ability to control the Black Sea and make any successful advances on the front line. In his view, continuing the aggression no longer holds any strategic sense. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
According to Sitki Egeli, an associate professor at Izmir University of Economics, the Russian Federation is currently in a stalemate where military progress has become impossible. The lack of tangible battlefield achievements calls into question the rationale behind continued hostilities, which increasingly resemble an act of irrational stubbornness rather than coherent policy.
Challenges to Russian leadership legitimacy
For the current Russian leadership, it is critical to formulate at least a minimal success that can be presented to the public as a “great victory.” The expert believes that the absence of such achievements in the event of a peace deal would pose a severe threat to the president’s domestic support base and overall legitimacy.
Paradoxical reaction of Russian society
Sitki Egeli also expressed surprise regarding the resilience of public support for the war within Russia. Despite persistent personnel losses and intensifying international pressure, the analyst observes a paradoxical trend where external sanctions and military failures sometimes only consolidate government supporters around the Kremlin.
