Alternative satellite systems are necessary for stable communications in combat zones
Due to intermittent speed restrictions and service issues with Starlink, Ukraine is actively seeking alternative satellite communication channels. This is essential for ensuring stable military command and maintaining connectivity for service members with their families. This was reported by Ukrinform, according to the portal PromPolitInform.
Non-staff advisor to the President Serhii «Flash» Beskrestnov emphasized during a briefing that the state is not limiting itself to current technical solutions. Work is currently underway to study the capabilities of other market players, in particular Amazon projects, as well as the OneWeb and Eutelsat networks.
Alternative communication channels
As Serhii Beskrestnov noted, the current restrictions in Starlink’s operation will not create critical problems for the military command system. After previous incidents, Ukraine has already managed to establish resilient alternative channels that allow for maintaining combat readiness even in the event of a total loss of access to SpaceX services.
However, the expert acknowledged the existence of serious challenges in specific niches. In particular, the stability of satellite internet connection remains critical for the functioning of frontline aviation. This issue also has an important social dimension, as for many defenders in remote positions, access to satellite internet is the only means of communication with loved ones.
Challenges for Ukrainian soldiers
Beskrestnov stressed that the morale of the army directly depends on the ability to maintain contact with relatives. This is especially true for electronic warfare units and FPV drone pilots operating in areas with no mobile coverage or other networks.
Previously, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the slowing down of Starlink and Starshield services to the emergence of additional risks when repelling air attacks. In turn, the Inspector General of the US Department of Defense decided not to investigate the facts of restricting access to these satellite services within our country.
